We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the one and only Barry Horne, a true Everton legend and a hero for Wales, has accepted the role of Honorary President! This is a momentous occasion for our supporters club and a fantastic link-up with a player who embodies the spirit, passion, and grit that we hold dear as Evertonians. Let’s take a moment to celebrate this appointment and reflect on the remarkable career of a man who left an indelible mark on both Everton and Welsh football.

The Engine Room General: Barry Horne’s Everton Years

Barry Horne arrived at Goodison Park in March 1992, and he quickly became an integral part of Howard Kendall’s midfield. His relentless energy, tenacious tackling, and surprising knack for crucial goals endeared him to the Everton faithful. He wasn’t just a workhorse; Horne possessed a footballing intelligence and a determination that often dragged the team through difficult periods.

While his time at Everton coincided with a challenging era for the club, Horne was a consistent performer, always giving his absolute all. He was a key figure in the midfield alongside the likes of Peter Reid and John Ebbrell, providing the steel and drive that the team needed. His commitment and never-say-die attitude epitomised the Everton spirit, making him a firm fan favourite. He played a significant role in helping Everton navigate some tough seasons, always leading by example with his tireless performances. Though he only won an FA Cup with Everton in 1995, his impact on the team as part of the ‘Dogs of War’ and the affection he holds from the supporters are testament to his contribution.

Before the Blue: A Career Forged in Grit

Horne’s journey to Everton was one built on perseverance. He began his career in non-league football before making his mark at Wrexham, where his combative midfield displays caught the eye. His move to Wimbledon saw him experience Premier League football for the first time, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level. It was at Wimbledon where he developed his reputation as a tough-tackling, dynamic midfielder, qualities that Evertonians would soon come to appreciate. His time at Southampton further honed his Premier League experience, setting the stage for his move to Goodison Park. This grounding in hard work and determination shaped the player who became a legend for Everton.

Beyond Goodison: Continued Service and Passion

After leaving Everton in 1996, Horne continued to play at a high level, representing clubs like Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, and finally Belper Town. Even after hanging up his boots, his passion for the game and for Everton never waned. He has remained a familiar face around Goodison Park, often seen supporting the team and engaging with fans.

Furthermore, Barry Horne is a celebrated figure in Welsh football history. He earned 59 caps for his country, representing Wales with the same commitment and passion he displayed for Everton. He was a key player in the Welsh midfield for many years, a period that saw some memorable international moments. His dedication to the Wales national team cemented his status as a true icon of Welsh football. His continued involvement in football, often in coaching or ambassadorial roles, demonstrates his enduring love for the sport.
